Fig pest reaches South Africa

adipata2.bmpThe black fig-fly Silba adipata McAlpine has just been recorded from South Africa for the first time. The known distribution of this species is trtaditionally around the Mediterranean so its presence in South Africa is probably due to an accidental introduction. Specimens were bred from figs near Stellenbosch by Prof. J.H.Giliomee during February 2007.
